Loulé’s exact origins are uncertain, though evidence such as the Roman fish-salting site at Cerro da Vila in Vilamoura shows early occupation. By the time the Moors arrived in 715, Loulé was already an important town. It was conquered by the Christians in 1249 and received a charter in 1266. Medieval remains, including the Castle and sections of the walls, still mark the city. In 1291, King Dinis established a major fair in Loulé, strengthening its role as a regional trading centre.

Although Loulé did not benefit directly from the Age of Discoveries due to its inland location, Manueline architectural elements can still be seen in buildings such as São Clemente and the Misericórdia Church. The region’s economy grew through agriculture—especially almonds and figs—and traditional crafts. Loulé became a city in 1988.

Today, Loulé is the economic hub of Portugal’s largest municipality, with coastal areas like Vilamoura and Quarteira focused on tourism, and inland areas on trade and farming. Nearby nature reserves such as Benémola and Rocha da Pena offer preserved landscapes and walking trails. Loulé is also famous for hosting one of Portugal’s best-known carnival celebrations.
